“In every walk with nature,
one receives far more than he seeks”.
Sonji’s process for creating encaustic mixed media art begins
with exploration. These journeys begin with the routine practice
of walking around on and near her farm. She tries to walk as often
as possible, in woods and fields, along streams, and over dirt
roads, delighting in the opportunities these provide, while paying
particular attention to her natural surroundings. These daily
excursions are meditative, providing time for reflecting and infusing
capitalizes on her wanderings to gather unique, beautiful, and
special items that she incorporates into her art. She collects
flowers, plant life, wood, bones, old fence wire, rusted metal,
and stones - basically anything that catches her eye as part of
the incredible natural environment that she happily calls home.
Once back to her studio, she gently stores the objects for possible
future use in her encaustic mixed media work.
